Tian, Tian, Tian...started life as a not very purposeful Ragnarok Online character. Who eventually got AU'd multiple times over, such that his RO self doesn't seem to be the main one any more...
In very simple terms, Tian is a moron. Or a dork.
In slightly more complicated terms, he is not very well-equipped to deal with troublesome characters. You know, characters like Yue.
It seems that in whichever universe he's born in, he comes from a family of power, or at least influential and/or rich. He doesn't talk about it much because it's sort of embarrassing, would draw more attention than he'd like, and isn't very interesting anyway. He's not too bad at studying, be it at normal school or things like swordsmanship, and probably is comfortable with formal situations. Probably has to deal with those all the time. In essence, he's your well-to-do rich kid with a bright future (so the adults say, although without so much as a drop of cunning he'll probably not get all the way to the top) and that is perhaps where the problems come in - he's been around straightforward, honest people all his life, so...well he just ends up being unable to deal with people on a deeper level. He's learning, though...
He tends to be quiet and doesn't actively seek human contact. Girls fancy him as the strong silent type. Actually it's mostly social ineptitude. He doesn't like having people attach themselves to him, which is likely why he never got himself a girlfriend. (depending on the 'verse, he might have an arranged fiancee, though) Yue is okay because he can take care of himself, although he tends to get annoyed at Tian for reasons Tian can't fathom. (For now, he just buys chocolate every time it happens, and hope it works.) To him, people tend to become too complicated when you have to be responsible for them, and it's not like they can't be straightforward...
He's pretty soft-hearted. Would be a dog person, if he could ever have a pet.
ragnarok online
In RO, Tian is a crusader/paladin. (Though in the light of recent updates to the game, he'd be a royal guard.) Born into a family in the capital city of Prontera with ties to the royal court, he had no trouble getting the job. It was probably the only one his parents had in mind, anyway. Either that, or be a knight, which didn't seem nearly as flashy to his parents. (Flashiness is totally a valid reason, how is being able to ride a gryphon not cool- alright, maybe crusader classes have more political sway, or something like that.)
Thus was Tian's fairly uneventful life. (Not counting the time he hit a peco in the stables when he was ten and set the entire flock on himself, requiring the intervention of several royal knights and leaves of yggdrasil.) Until he came across a guy on the street who knocked him out and took his money. Said guy was Wu Yue, who lost his memory somewhere previously and decided to tag along. In the hopes that he'd regain his memory somewhere. Tian was kind of wary about this at first (so was the grand peco) but loosened up later. (The peco never did. It's still terrified of Yue.)
Who knows what happened next? (i.e. Never got down to figuring out)
angels
Tian was the child of two scientists with connections to the government. His parents were directly involved in the experiments on the modified humans (it's very likely that they had a hand in creating Yue), though it's unclear how much influence they had over the experiments. Young Tian was brought to the labs on one occasion, where he had a one-sided staring contest with Yue. It wasn't until many years later, when the experiments escaped and the labs were abandoned, that he understood what he saw then. It's a fuzzy memory, though, so he can't be too sure of things. Tian's parents' whereabouts are unknown; they're presumed to be dead, after the escape incident happened at their labs.
His sword skills appear to have been taught to him by a relative, an uncle or grandfather, not too sure on that point - he hasn't told me yet. It's pretty clear that he learnt them for self-defense, against those zombie things running around outside. That and bounty hunter was one of the best jobs to be had at the time. (Demons are now less of a threat than they used to be - you kind of have to actively look for them now. Fewer demons = fewer hearts = less pay. )
After the troublesome stuff happened, he found a place to live, an apartment in a quiet street. He found Wu Yue collapsed in front of the convenience store (conveniently placed for maximum tripping effect) and took him back (because bringing a suspiciously demon-like guy back home to see if he's alright makes the most sense ever, but then again, this is Tian...) which then resulted in Yue latching on to Tian and...thus the adventures of Tian the bounty hunter and Wu Yue the modified demon began.
Tian goes to church not because he believes, but for that sense of familiarity. He used to go with his parents. It's some kind of nostalgia that makes him go. Yue doesn't follow because anything that involves being under bright sunlight for even a short while is do not want.
Things happen, Yue's brothers come after him and the last thing that happened was Yue going out of the building they were trapped in to face them as Tian, bleeding from his wounds, falls unconscious inside.
schoolboys
Tian is a quiet young teenager in a prestigious school. One day a mysterious albino boy transfers into class and starts radiating gay for Tian, who remains well and completely oblivious of his female classmates' intentions to get the two of them together! Oh and there are a couple of kids from the next school who look rather like Yue.
Most of this AU is about Tian being oblivious. That is, him being himself.
feudal japan
Sora is a samurai. (details?)
He discovers Wu Yue on the beach, who apparently speaks only Chinese, and after some pointing, is dubbed Tian by Yue. Yue follows him around (as always appears to be the case) and Tian sees to his care. Despite the language barrier.
At some point in time, Tian's daimyo dies. Tragedy ensues. Tian decides he should kill himself out of loyalty. Yue either
1. Kills Tian himself, makes that known, and rums away to somewhere.
2. Wastes Tian's sword arm so he can't kill himself, runs away and spreads the word that he killed Tian, and Tian lives on alone under a different name, searching for Yue. (He doesn't know what he'll do if he finds Yue, but that was apparently the most logical course of action to him)
band
Tian is the lead singer of a band, Lost Crusaders. (Following the pattern, his parents must have strong ties with the record company, though he must be pretty good himself to get famous. Or just pretty.) Said band is at odds with Wu Yue's band, Assassin's List. On the surface, at least. It's for publicity. The managers thought it would be a nice idea to set them up as rivals, so it happened.
In reality, both bands don't actually dislike each other (save for an exceptionally dense guy on Tian's side who believes it's real). In reality, Tian and Yue live in the same apartment in a block called the Cadenza.
Naoh, a reporter trying to make it big, tails Tian home after a recording session and discovers the truth. After being mistaken for the pizza delivery guy, being threatened to be eaten by Yue, and having her precious tape confiscated, the poor girl gets invited in for coffee.
Also, Yue kicks kittens.
